A preview of my poster/sign in progress for the restaurant I work for in Pasadena, CA called La Grande Orange Cafe. They were in dire need of a sign with prices of their delicious Chocolate Sea Salt Cookies and English Muffins (both homemade), among several other things they have for sale.

If you saw the signs they have up right now, you would want to punish whoever committed those type crimes.

Everything is hand-drawn/painted on Rives BFK Paper and is about 16” x 18”. I based the script on Young Baroque and the rest of the lettering on Young Finesse. I actually didn’t plan to base it only on the legendary and terribly missed Doyald Young’s typefaces but they really fit well with the restaurant to me so I decided to use both. I also wanted to use a crow quill pen and ink or to paint the whole thing with watercolor but I’m not quite sure yet. For Now I just painted the lemon kissing the orange with watercolor and did the lettering all in colored pencil. I’m really tempted to go over the lettering with ink or watercolor and to make the background a pale yellow hue. I don’t have much experience with the crow quill or watercolor so I’m not so sure what I shall do yet.

It is a great restaurant that is definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. It is located at the train station on Raymond and Del Mar. It is very beautiful inside and has a very nostalgic feel to it that not many other restaurants or buildings alone can provide. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the food!

“You talkin’ to me?”

From one of my all time favorite movies, Taxi Driver.. It was my first time attempting to distort a face and not draw a portrait traditionally.

That’s all. Now time to move on!……

…and of course, aside from life drawing, nothing beats copying from the Old Masters…

What the hell, might as well post some drawings and paintings from my beginnings at Art Center as well, starting with of course some traditional drawings from life of shirt(s), model, and the classmate Lee Bolton

I was always too shy to show any of these drawings and paintings to anyone so I’m finally gonna get that part over with so I can move forward with no regrets..

This was yet another project for Type 1, in which we had to bind our own books manipulate the letters h, e, and n. For the bolded h, we had to condense it twice and expand it twice. For e, we had to draw 3 Italic e’s, each at a different slant. For n, we had to draw it in 2 different weights.

Not only was this my first time laying things out on indesign and just messing with composition other than in an illustration, but it was also my first time binding a book. I really enjoyed every step of the process from drawing each letter to binding the book. I hope to do more work in the future that requires designing and binding my own book.

This was another project from Type 1 in which we had to layout 4 different letters, all a different typeface, and none being completely exposed. This was also my first attempt at drawing letters digitally on illustrator (something completely new to me at the time).

I decided to revisit some of my old projects from my Type 1 course at Art Center. It was my very first introduction to the world of Typography, and ever since then I’ve been a typophile. Prior to that course, I had no knowledge that such a world existed full of other freaks such as myself that love letters as much as I do.

This was my first attempt at drawing letters in script. My instructor, Nils Lindstrom chose the word Gyrofrequency for me to draw:

Gyrofrequency [jahy-roh-free-kwuhn-seenoun, plural -cies. Physics .

gyro-frequency
cyclotron frequency

the frequency of rotation of a charged particle of specified nature describing, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, a helical curve around the lines of force of the field

NOTE – The gyro-frequency fc is given by the expression:

where B is the magnetic flux density, m and q are the mass and the charge of the particle respectively.

“What moves me about…what’s called technique…is that it comes from some mysterious deep place. I mean it can have something to do with paper and the developer and all that stuff, but it comes mostly from some very deep choices somebody has made that take a long time and keep haunting them.” - Diane Arbus

Beautiful photographs from a beautiful photographer..

Interesting comparison of subject matter to the Beauty Culture Exhibit showing right now at the Annenberg Space for Photography

Was I possibly trying to channel Marian Bantjes as I put together my letterpress project at Type Camp in the Shakespeare Press Museum?

Although quite different from each other, I came across this amazing piece by Marian and it reminded me of the project I did at Type Camp. (If mine is illegible it says “remy engages in Obsessive Compulsive pursuits”)

Obviously not as beautiful as hers, but I worked with what was left for me to find to create something “obsessive” looking.Take a closer look at the letters in Obsessive and you’ll see the irony of the final product and why it drove me crazy.
